Halloween 2009: The Idea

Without a predetermined Halloween theme in July (oh, who are we kidding, more like January) this year, I've been putting off figuring out what I want to be/do for a costume. Last year by the start of October I already had my costume pieces together and was just working out the details of my hair.

I wanted to do something really fun this year and pick something that would be easily recognizable. We toyed with the idea of doing Marc Antony & Cleopatra, Batman & Robin or Catwoman or Superwoman, and Bonnie & Clyde (the boy wanted to be a gangster... SURPRISE). After looking at a few pictures of Bonnie & Clyde - the boy's clear favorite - I was unimpressed. But it helped me think up the perfect idea: gangsters & flappers!

Now the boy gets to be a Prohibition Era, John Dillinger-esque gangster and I get to be a Louise Brooks inspired flapper.

"Most beautiful dumb girls think they are smart and get away with it, because other people, on the whole, aren't much smarter."

"A well dressed woman, even though her purse is painfully empty, can conquer the world."

Let the costuming begin!

Halloween: Now It's Serious

I managed to find the PERFECT dress yesterday for my Rita Hayworth outfit at Filene's Basement. I've had such amazing luck there for cheap dresses, especially costumes. Let's just say it's been the bright spot in the last few days. Anywho, here's what the outfit looks like so far:

I might change the shoes. And clearly the hair & make-up are lacking.

Tonight I'm trying the big foam rollers as a test run for the hair-do.

For a look at the inspiration outfit & attitude, check out the Put the Blame on Mame clip of Rita from the movie Gilda.

The morning after: [PICTURE COMING SOON!]

Update: 3pm - Curls are starting to fall (damn long, thick hair - haha). So I think next time, I'm going to try mousse with leave in before I roll. I also wanted to post a link to The Fedora Lounge and give a shout out to the ladies their for their insight and inspiration. This is definitely a look I will be doing more often - costume or not!

Rita Hayworth

So I'm leaving for the beach today. I did my graduation clearance paperwork. Turned in my co-op paperwork. Emailed my teacher about my stupidity of not turning in my paper the right way on BlackBoard. And bought a shit ton (literally, they're like books) of fashiony magazines.

Clearly, I'm now thinking about Halloween. I think I've settled on Rita Hayworth. It still might change. What do we think?

HALLOWEEN! (First in a series, to be sure)

And no, I will tell you right now, it is NOT too early. You gotta get the good costumes when it's still fun and relaxing to shop. Everything (well the big stuff anyways) should be taken care of by Columbus Day.

So we're kicking around the idea of doing Hollywood this year. I think we're going to go with old school glam Hollywood instead of va-jay-jay flashing, rich, talentless, skinny bitches Hollywood. I think we should really define it as pin-ups and rat pack era. Go curvy ladies!

So, since Kari is taking Marilyn, I'm thinking maybe doing Liz Taylor, Betty Grable, or Veronica Lake. Any opinions? Ideas?
